Jennifer Hovey- Artistic Director


Jennifer Hovey (CEO / Artistic Director) Is the Founder of Sapphire Theatre Company and has Directed and Produced productions since its inception in 2015. She most recently Directed The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Lyceum Theatre) She has also produced and directed STC’s productions of Little Shop of Horrors (Tenth Avenue Arts Center), and Next to Normal (California Center for the Arts Escondido), as well as the Cabaret Summer Series: The Cast Party, All That Jazz (The Geoffrey Off Broadway), The New Broadway (Moxie Theatre), Producer for “Home” A Musical Performance (Diversionary Theatre). She will be Producing STC’s upcoming musical Into The Woods (Tenth Avenue Arts Center). Originally from San Diego she has been in the industry as Actor, Producer, and Director. She has attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (Los Angeles CA) and is an alumnus of the University of the Arts- BFA Musical Theatre (Philadelphia PA) Having lived and worked in New York City, Portland, and Philadelphia, she has returned to her hometown of San Diego to open Sapphire Theatre Company, a non-profit regional theatre company to bring professional Broadway quality musical theatre of unique proportions to San Diego stage. Regional acting credits include: Peter Pan (Peter), Fiorello! (Marie), Big River (Mary-Jane), The Sound of Music (Maria), Bye Bye Birdie (Rosie), Fiddler on the Roof (Fruma-Sarah), as well as Co-Directing and starring in Ruthless! As Judy Denmark/Ginger Delmarco which is the production that ignited her passion for Directing. She would like to thank her Family, as well as the San Diego arts community for their endless time and support they have generously put forth into making STC a fast-growing success story.

Erik Ramirez- Executive Director


Erik’s experience started in performing arts at a very young age, after high school he began working and interning with multiple companies to help grow his knowledge. He has worked with an array of directors and producers taking from each experience and using it in his own productions. His schooling background is in public relations and performing/visual arts. Some favorite past roles include; Beast/Gaston (Beauty and the Beast), Tony (Billy Elliot), Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf (Into The Woods), Zoser (Aida), Dr.Madden (Next to Normal), Tom Collins (RENT), Scrooge (A Christmas Carol), Joseph (Technicolor Dreamcoat) and Albert Lennox (The Secret Garden). His love of the community and artful expression attracted him to this art form immediately. While he still can be seen on the stage, he has taken a behind the scenes approach recently through Sapphire Theatre Company. He has directed many cabarets from their summer cabaret series, managed marketing and social media, while working closely with Jennifer Hovey to build the company. He’s excited to use his past experience with producing/directing, production management and visual art at Sapphire. Thank you for your support of the arts and helping keep the art community alive. It’s extremely important to keep theatre thriving while ensuring diverse views and talents highlighted.

Matthew Starkey- Associate Creative Director


Matthew Starkey has been in numerous shows in San Diego and Riverside Counties. Some of his favorite credits include: Gabriel John Utterson in Jekyll & Hyde, Cousin Kevin in The Who’s Tommy, Man 2 in Songs for a New World, Linus in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Ren in Footloose, Man 1 in Five Course Love. Starkey (as he is often referred) spends most weekends Race Announcing for various events from 5K’s to Triathlons, and during the week he supports events at Road Runner Sports, MCs and Hosts at other events, and most importantly he is the Campaign Manager for Cheetah Charity Runners, a non-profit run team that supports the Emilio Nares Foundation, which helps navigate underprivileged families through their child’s journey with cancer. He could not keep such a busy schedule without all the love and support from his wife Stephanie. Starkey is incredibly happy to be part of the STC Artistic Team, as well as performing the role of Baker in Sapphire Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Into The Woods.

Julie Rogelstad- Outreach and Public Relations


Julie is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and is originally from San Diego, CA. This is her second mainstage production with Sapphire Theatre Company having also played Diana in Next to Normal (California Center for Arts Escondido) cabaret series: Home (Diversionary Theatre) The New Broadway (Moxie Theatre) Regional credits include: Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Lucy in Jekyll and Hyde, Anita in West Side Story, Gloria in Damn Yankees, Petra in A Little Night Music, and Liz in High Society. Julie is thrilled to be on the STC Board as head of Outreach and Public Relations. She is also a member of the Actors’ Equity Association.

Jennika Grace- Resident Choreographer


Studied dance at Palomar College where she was invited to dance with Unity Dance Ensemble. She was awarded “Dancer of the Year in 2008 and “Choreographer of the Year” in 2010. Since moving to Los Angeles she has worked as back-up singer for pop artist Viennie V., performing on Verizon’s APAHM Tour in 2012, and singing back-up on her second album. She has performed and choreographed for Axxiom Dance Collective, a San Diego based company created by Joei Waldron. She has sung back-up on two gospel albums. Presently, she teaches beginning Jazz and Musical Theater at Artifex in Motion in Escondido, and is now part of Kaleidoscope Movement. Jennika was the Choreographer for Sapphire Theatre Company’s production of Little Shop of Horrors. You will also be able to see her Choreography in STC’s upcoming production of Into the Woods.

Chris Nolan- Resident Sound Engineer


Christopher Nolan is a Certified Pro Tools User and Sound Engineer. Chis has an Associates Degree in Music Arts, and has also studied over ten years of music theory. He has had seven years of experience recording, mixing, mastering, engineering live sound, and producing music. He has produced and digitally distributed iTunes singles and EPs, as well as radio-mastered local artists’ music and recorded live performances. Ptodiced mixed and mastered artists Micaiah Slocum, Curiouser, Roger Anderson Consort, Jazzmine Farol and many more.
